Maybe once a decade an architect will design a home that is built in Dallas that redefines how we think of estate homes only a few miles from the Arts District in downtown Dallas. This Turtle Creek estate home is built on a site that I determined was the best site in the Park Cities when I was coordinating the AIA Dallas Chapter's list of 50 Significant Homes for their 50th Anniversary. Now here is an architecturally significant home that is modern, but with materials that reflect its substance, importance and site. The home is modern in that it recedes into its Turtle Creek site. This is a remarkable architectural feat for a large home. Architect Greg Wyatt used materials that reflect and lend themselves to the bucolic creek setting of this home.
The strong vertical and horizontal elements and pattern of design you will see in the façade, abundant windows, and details from the stair newel and balustrades to the stone surrounding the fireplace. Greg Wyatt, architect, did a brilliant job keeping the home open and relating to the gorgeous site in University Park and creating a warmth and intimacy even in large rooms. This Turtle Creek home expresses the idea that modernity can include the timeless architectural notes of great estate homes.
