Dallas and Texas Architect

The poetic rigor of Jason Smith and Signe Smith’s architectural work reminds me that all great architects seem to come from a strong architectural family tree.

Architecturally Significant Home in Preston Hollow

Architects Jason and Signe Smith of smitharc, continue to demonstrate the architecture that is essential to expressing the desires and personalities of their clients.

Smitharc designed home in Shorecrest Estate

The personalities of the owners of the modern home in the Shorecrest Estate neighborhood are expressed by thea materials – bold, rugged, and modern juxtaposed with clean linear geometric patterns of stacked stone that are subtle and sleek.

In this Preston Hollow modern home the difference in the International modern style desired by one spouse was contrasted beautifully with the softer Texas modern desires of the other spouse.  The result is a beautiful interplay of materials and forms that are elegantly expressed in this home.

2430 Victory Park Lane, Dallas, Texas

This private penthouse occupies an entire floor atop the W hotel & residences tower overlooking downtown Dallas. Designed as both an urban residence for a large family and as a space to host large events, the design incorporates luxurious materials in an evolving sequence of spaces.

This house renovation includes a requirement for a new elevator which opened the opportunity to showcase the Owner’s art collection and add drama and natural lighting to the existing diminutive and dark entry foyer.

Smitharc Designed Home in Bluffview

This house renovation reverses decades of ad-hoc additions to a midcentury modernist house while capitalizing on the uncommonly lush and secluded urban site. Working in the modernist language of the original house, long horizontal forms, dramatic cantilevers and large expanses of glass characterize the new 2-story structure.

This house renovation augments an existing mid-century modernist design for a growing family. The entire ground floor of the structure was revitalized including reconfigurations to include a library, powder room, and an updated dining room and kitchen. A new glass and steel pavilion addition includes a sitting room and children’s study. New courtyard and pool designs reinforce the connection of indoor and outdoor spaces.

Thoughts on the Contributions of Architect Signe & Jason Smith Continued

This husband and wife architectural team, with degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, have worked with exemplary firms, providing them a launching pad for their thriving firm, doing precise and exciting modern work for extraordinary clients with a refined aesthetic.

Signe & Jason Smith
Expressing Modern Architecture

Signe and Jason experienced the craft and the problem solving of Lawrence Speck when Jason worked as the project architect on the renovation of the Bud Oglesby house on Turtle Creek. The reductionist influence of Lionel Morrison can be seen as Jason Smith worked in his early years at Morrison Seifert Murphy. Jason Smith continually repeats and refines his best design solutions. Signe and Jason approach the penthouse of the Omni in Fort Worth with their experience as project architects when they worked for Emily Summers on the penthouse of the W hotel in Dallas.

Jason Smith and Signe Smith draw from global influences that they tailor to the region in which they work. While their designs vary, their theme of light, integrating exterior and interior spaces, how one approaches the home, and construction quality remains consistent.

International Modern and Texas Modern Are Expressed

Architects Jason and Signe Smith of Smitharc, continue to demonstrate the architecture that is essential to expressing the desires and personalities of their clients. This husband and wife team astutely observe, intently listen, and gracefully collaborate with their clients, the site and each other. We see in the estate area Brookview home the architects translating and artfully articulating one of the client’s purity of passion into the architecture of the entrance hall. This hall filled with dappled light becomes a performance hall emanating from both the piano and from the animation of the guests.

The dappled light comes from recognizing that moving the setback of the home 20 feet and saving the mature Live Oak trees allows them to break the conventional rule of avoiding a southern exposure for a facade of principally glass. Here the Live Oaks provide beautifully filtered light the entire year.

Bernoulli Effect Created at Modern Home

Bernoulli Effect at Modern Home

Jason and Signe Smith recognized the other half of the couple had an interest in the purity of performance. Part of the architects’ response was creating a Bernoulli effect of warm breezes that cool the air over the pool and pulls the hot air up through the double slotted roof deck that shades the rear terrace. This design is visually elegant and exudes performance.

In this large Preston Hollow estate area modern home the impression of the space is manipulated by materials such as the fossil stone surfaces to make the large spaces feel intimate or the glazed walls to make small spaces feel expansive.

International Modern and Texas Modern Are Expressed

International Modern and Texas Modern Are Expressed

Architects Signe and Jason Smith of smitharc are also able to find architectural ways to accentuate the design rather than dilute design preferences of competing aesthetic interests. On this Preston Hollow modern home the starkInternational modern style desired by one spouse was contrasted beautifully with the softer Texas modern desires of the other spouse. The resulting interplay of materials and form are gracefully expressed in a cohesive home which everyone loves.

Materials Express the Personality of Modern Home

In another home, the personalities of the owners of amodern home found in the Shorecrest neighborhood are expressed by the materials – bold, rugged, and modern juxtaposed with clean linear geometric patterns of stacked stone that are subtle and sleek. The design was created to accommodate the budget and what is essential for the home.

For this modern home that was raised out of a floodplain in the Shorecrest neighborhood, you will see Jason and Signe Smith created honest architecture that tells the story of the construction and creates a mood in which the specific elements of the home almost disappear as they become part of the whole experience. Jason and Signe Smith also designed rooms with multiple purposes. Intimate connections to nature are created by windows from the bedrooms to the courtyards. The large living areas provide expansive views of the environment.

Modern Home and Shorecrest Neighborhood

Smitharc designed a compelling modern home for square footage cost that is less than the nearby generic builder modern homes. The linear stacked brick front wall with the long horizontal opening provides privacy for the home and definition for a courtyard while allowing one to view the verdant background of trees and nature. A floating wide and deep cantilevered roof creates a ceremonial entrance.

Open Courtyard Wall

The centered horizontal opening makes the trees, bushes and hedges in the back of the home visible from the street while in the courtyard trees outside of the street are visible. The textures of robust monochromatic materials create depth and interest in this modern home found in the Dallas Shorecrest estate neighborhood.
