Howard Meyer Architect Designed Home on 2 Acres
4101 Cochran Chapel Road, Dallas, Texas
Cochran Chapel Real Estate – Sold by Douglas Newby
Howard Meyer is best known for his very modern work at the mid-century. Also recognized in the AIA Guide to Dallas Architecture and by architectural historians is his splendid design of eclectic homes built in the 1930s. Located high on the hillside of Cochran Chapel is his finest Colonial Revival home in Dallas. Built in 1938, this architecturally significant home has an asymmetrical facade with a gabled roof, side wings, six and eight panel double hung sashes and a bay window reflecting both the style and this period of Colonial Revival architecture.
Stone paths and a beautiful canopy of trees add to the charm of this important residence. This home, differing in design from contemporary Howard Meyer homes, shares the graceful proportions and the compulsive attention to construction – the magic of Howard Meyer’s works.
You enter Cochran Chapel through stone columns, with homes on one side of the street sitting on the edge of a ravine and creek and homes on the other side positioned high on a hill, overlooking the greenbelt. It is no wonder that this quiet, protected street is so desired. Homes of $5,000,000 have been built, period homes restored and modern homes designed. When almost every home is on two or three acres you enjoy the privacy, elegance and opulence all on a country lane. This small, prestigious neighborhood shares the wooded charm of Bluffview and the lot size of Volk Estates. The quality of this home is indicative of the detailed work and engineering for which Howard Meyer is known. The tightly spaced foundation piers down to rock, the carved doors and subtle brass hardware were designed or selected by the architect. The gentle stairs gracefully curve as they ascend to the second floor. You look through multi-paned windows into endless gardens and lawn uninterrupted visually by other homes. Robert Johnson Perry, another modernist, was called in twenty years later to add the library. It is interesting that two modernists are responsible for this traditional home. The benefit is you have clean uncluttered lines, classic proportions and the highest quality of materials and construction.
