Munger Place Monuments are Dedicated by City Council Member

Moving into their Junius Street home in 1974 in the Munger Place Historic District neighborhood, Jackie Burden and Susanne Starling made a tremendous contribution to the neighborhood. Jackie Burden is pictured here with long-time Munger Place homeowner Douglas Newby.
Jackie Burden and Susanne Starling, two history professors, moved into their Junius home on January 4, 1974. They made a tremendous contribution to the neighborhood as one of the first urban pioneers in Munger Place. I always said that Jackie Burden made the best speeches on the floor of the East Dallas Community Design Committee of anyone I have ever heard. It was a real treat to see her at the dedication ceremony of the Munger Place >Monuments, having known her for almost five decades. She recounted early stories of me and Bob Logan, who she referred to as my mentor in the neighborhood. Munger Place Homeowner Association voted in the late 1990s to build Munger Place >Columns and dedicate the one on Reiger to Robert D. Logan for his work initiating the East Dallas Bar Ordinance that permanently shut down over 200 honkytonks, beer and wine licensed bars, that were hotbeds of criminal activity. Twenty-seven years later, this motion that passed the homeowner’s association was not followed up on, but it was fun to hear Jackie Burden talk about what a nice man he was and how much he did for the neighborhood.
