John Barthel, Dallas Architect
Past Dallas Architect
John Edgar Barthel was a distinguished architect who significantly contributed to Dallas’s mid-century modern landscape. After earning his Master’s in Architecture and City Planning from the Cranbrook Academy of Art under Eliel Saarinen, Barthel moved to Dallas in 1952 to work with renowned architect George E. Dahl. In 1959, he designed his personal residence at 8931 Capri Court, a striking example of mid-century modern architecture featuring angular folded roofs and expansive 20-foot windows that harmonize with the lush, park-like surroundings. This iconic home received the 25-Year Residential Award from the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 2002. Barthel’s work exemplifies a seamless blend of innovative design and natural integration, leaving a lasting impact on Dallas’s architectural heritage.
